Five years ago, I left my wife for my secretary, convinced she had betrayed me. But when my ex-wife showed up at my hotel with twin boys who looked exactly like me, my entire world came crashing down.

My new partner screamed, “She’s only after your money!” I said nothing. Instead, I opened the envelope my ex-wife had brought and froze when I saw a signature I had never written…

PART 1

“Those boys can’t be yours, Grant! That woman cheated on you five years ago!” Courtney shouted before he could ask a single question.

But Grant Holloway had stopped listening. He was staring at two five-year-old boys who had just walked into the luxury hotel he owned. They were identical to each other, and something about them turned his blood to ice: the same dark eyes as his, the same dimple in the chin, and the habit of raising the left eyebrow whenever they didn’t trust someone.

One wore a navy sweater. The other clutched an old teddy bear with one button eye and the other stitched on with black thread.

Grant felt his heart stop.

Behind them stood Natalie.

His ex-wife.

The woman he had thrown out of his life five years earlier, accusing her of infidelity and of betraying the company they had built practically from scratch.

That Tuesday morning, the hotel lobby in Austin was packed with executives, tourists, and staff rushing in every direction. Grant had been walking beside Courtney, his former secretary and current girlfriend, going over the arrangements for an important meeting.

Until he saw those faces.

“Natalie…” he murmured.

She looked up.

She wore a simple floral dress, a light cardigan, and carried a worn purse. No jewelry, no expensive clothes. She looked like a woman who had learned to get by without asking anyone for anything.

“Hello, Grant.”

One of the boys hid behind her legs.

“Mommy, why is that man staring at us?”

“Because he doesn’t know us, sweetheart,” Natalie answered.

Those words hurt more than any insult could have.

Grant stepped closer, slowly.

“How old are they?”

“Five. They turned five in April.”

Grant did the math in his head.

They had divorced in July, five years ago.

He remembered that afternoon in his office, when Courtney showed him photographs of Natalie walking into a restaurant with a stranger. There had also been emails that supposedly proved she was selling confidential information to a competitor.

Natalie had cried in helpless fury.

“Grant, investigate. I swear it’s all lies.”

But he hadn’t investigated.

He had signed the divorce papers, pushed her out of the business, and, months later, started a relationship with Courtney.

Now two little boys stood in front of him who looked like they’d stepped out of his own childhood photographs.

“Natalie… are they my sons?”

She met his eyes without lowering her head.

“You lost the right to ask me that when you decided to believe someone else without hearing me out.”

Courtney stepped between them at once.

“Grant, let’s go! She’s using those kids to get money out of you!”

Natalie let out a bitter laugh.

“I didn’t come for money. And I didn’t come to win him back.”

She pointed straight at Courtney.

“I came for her.”

Courtney took a step back.

Then Natalie opened her purse and pulled out a yellowed envelope.

“Two weeks after our divorce, I sent you this by certified mail. It came back unopened.”

Grant took the envelope.

Across the front, stamped in red: REFUSED BY ADDRESSEE.

Below it was a signature that imitated his perfectly.

“I never refused this letter,” he whispered.

“I know,” Natalie replied.

Grant studied the green ink of that signature. In his entire life he had never used a pen with green ink.

But he remembered exactly who kept one on her desk.

He slowly raised his eyes to Courtney.

And when she saw the envelope, all the color drained from her face.

What Natalie had kept hidden for five years was about to destroy far more than a marriage.

PART 2

Grant asked that the boys be taken to the children’s lounge in the restaurant and personally asked Jenna, the front desk manager, to stay with them.

Then he led Natalie and Courtney to a private conference room.

“Open it,” Natalie ordered.

Grant carefully tore the paper.

First came a letter in his ex-wife’s handwriting.

Grant, I know you don’t believe me anymore, but you have a right to know. I’m pregnant. The doctor confirmed it’s twins. I’m not asking you to come back. I just want you to know you’re going to be a father.

Behind it was an ultrasound.

Twin pregnancy. Seven weeks.

Grant felt his legs give out.

“You tried to tell me?”

“I called you seven times. Courtney answered the last three. She told me you had ordered that I never contact you again.”

Grant turned to his girlfriend.

“Is that true?”

“You were devastated,” Courtney said. “You asked me not to let her bother you.”

“I never knew she was pregnant!”

Courtney opened her mouth, but nothing came out.

Then Natalie took something else from her purse: an old hotel key card.

“Three days ago I received an anonymous package. It had this card and a note: Tuesday, noon. Bring your sons. Grant needs to see them. Then check the basement archive.”

Grant recognized the card immediately.

It was one of the special passes executives had used before the security system was modernized.

At that moment his cell phone rang.

It was Frank, the head of security.

“Mr. Holloway, someone just entered the archive using a duplicated executive credential. Are you in the basement?”

“No. Seal off that area. I’m on my way.”

Courtney jumped to her feet.

“Grant, please, don’t go down there. We can talk about it tomorrow.”

But he had already made up his mind.

Natalie insisted on going with him.

In the archive they found a metal box on a desk. Inside was a small recorder and a note: Listen before you trust your partner.

Grant pressed the button.

First there was static. Then a man’s voice, unmistakable.

“With those photographs and the altered emails, it’ll be enough. Grant is proud. If he thinks his wife cheated on him, he’ll never check the accounts.”

It was Russell Kane.

His business partner and best friend of twenty years.

The next voice was Courtney’s.

“And if Natalie proves it’s all fake?”

“She won’t get the chance. By then she’ll be out of the hotel.”

Grant switched off the recorder, shaking.

Then they heard footsteps.

Russell appeared in the doorway.

“Grant! Courtney called me, worried sick. She says your ex-wife is trying to manipulate you.”

Grant slipped the recorder inside his jacket.

“I found some strange papers. Somebody must be messing with me.”

“Give them to me. I’ll look into it.”

“Frank already has them,” Grant lied.

For a few seconds Russell studied him.

Then he smiled.

“Of course, brother. That’s what friends are for.”

When Russell left, Natalie gripped Grant’s arm.

“That man knows a lot more than what we just heard.”

Grant was about to answer when another call came in.

It was Jenna.

She was crying.

“Mr. Holloway… I’m so sorry. I went to get juice, and when I came back the boys were gone. A man said you’d sent him. He showed me an executive ID…”

Natalie snatched the phone.

“Where are my sons?”

No one answered.

Grant ran to the security room.

The cameras showed Russell walking down a service corridor. He was carrying Eli and holding Owen by the hand.

The boys didn’t seem to understand what was happening.

Then the internal phone rang.
