My twin brother, Julian, and his wife, Chloe, had been trying to have a baby for years. When they finally asked if I’d consider becoming their surrogate, I agreed.
Julian had been the best brother and my best friend my entire life. He’d always supported me and always been there for me. I already had a son of my own, and I understood the kind of love they were longing for. I wanted to help them. Especially because whenever I saw Julian spending time with my son, he seemed happiest in those moments.
When they found out it was a girl, they started buying tiny dresses and toys. They even painted the nursery pink.
When I finally gave birth, Chloe and Julian came to my hospital room right away. Chloe cried with joy when she saw her daughter.
Then Julian picked up the baby.
He stared at her for a few seconds.
Then his face went pale.
When I asked if he was okay, he said in a trembling voice:
“I’m sorry, but… I can’t take her.”
I thought I’d misheard him.
“Julian, she’s your daughter. What are you talking about?”
He looked directly at Chloe.
Then he looked straight at me and said:
“I’m sorry, but I’m not taking her home with me!”
And he placed the baby back into my arms.
With tears in her eyes, Chloe demanded to know why they couldn’t take their daughter home.
Julian exhaled, his face turning red, and said:
“Look at her back. We can’t do this. She can’t be our daughter.”
I looked at the baby’s back and nearly fainted.
Chloe screamed so loudly that people all over the floor could hear her, and hospital staff came rushing over to see what had happened…
PART 2: THE MARK ON THE SKIN
The room erupted into total chaos.
Two labor and delivery nurses rushed through the door, followed immediately by the attending obstetrician. Chloe was hysterical, her hands pressed against her face, her sobs echoing wildly into the hallway.
“What’s going on in here?” the doctor demanded, stepping between Julian and the bassinet. “Is the patient okay? Is the baby in distress?”
My hands were shaking so violently I could barely hold the infant against my chest. I stared down at the small of my newborn niece’s back.
Stretched across her delicate, translucent skin, just above her left hip, was a distinct, raised birthmark—a jagged, star-shaped patch of dark pigmentation with a pale, heart-shaped center.
It wasn’t just a random birthmark.
It was an exact, identical match to a birthmark I had seen my entire life.
My husband, David, had that exact same mark on his lower back.
I felt the room tilt on its axis. Cold sweat broke out across my forehead. No. No, that’s impossible, my mind screamed. It was an IVF procedure. It was Chloe’s egg and Julian’s sperm. The embryo was created at a certified fertility clinic. I was just the gestational carrier!
Julian stood frozen by the window, his eyes wide with a terrifying combination of rage, grief, and disgust. He wasn’t looking at the baby. He was staring dead at his wife.
“Julian, please!” Chloe wept, stumbling toward him, reaching for his arm. “I don’t understand! What are you saying? Why are you looking at me like that?!”
Julian shoved her hand away with a force that shocked us all. “Don’t touch me, Chloe!” he roared, his voice cracking. “Do you think I’m an idiot?! Do you think I don’t know whose mark that is?!”
Chloe blinked through her tears, her face a mask of absolute confusion. “Whose mark?! It’s a birthmark, Julian! Lots of babies have birthmarks!”
“David has that mark!” Julian screamed, pointing a trembling finger at me and the baby. “My brother-in-law! My sister’s husband! The man who lives twenty minutes away from us!”
The nurses went dead silent. The doctor looked between us, her professional composure instantly hardening.
I felt like I had been hit by a freight train. “Julian… what are you implying?” I whispered, my voice barely audible over the hum of the hospital monitors. “David and I have been married for seven years. I carried your baby as a favor to you and Chloe. Are you… are you accusing me of sleeping with my own husband to get pregnant? We used your embryo!”
“I’m not accusing you, Sarah,” Julian said, his eyes finally shifting to me, filled with a sickening, tragic pity. “I know you didn’t do anything wrong. You trusted the clinic. You trusted your husband. And you trusted her.”
He whipped his head back to Chloe, who had gone completely paper-white.
“Julian…” Chloe choked out, her voice dropping into a terrifyingly small whisper. “What… what did you do?”
