The Night Grant Returned Earlier Than Expected

**PART 1**

Grant Whitmore was meant to remain in Chicago until Friday afternoon.
For four demanding days, he had been negotiating a partnership that could transform the future of the technology company he had spent fifteen years building.
By Thursday evening, though, the final documents were completed ahead of schedule.

Rather than spending another night at the hotel, Grant booked the earliest flight home to Connecticut.
He wanted to surprise his wife, Audrey.
More than anything, he wanted to hold their six-week-old son, Caleb.

Grant lived with his family in a spacious home outside Greenwich, a property that had remained in the Whitmore family for generations. His mother, Lenora, stayed in the east wing whenever she visited, which recently seemed to happen almost every week.

As his car turned into the driveway that chilly December evening, Grant expected to see the familiar lights Audrey always kept glowing beside the front windows.
Instead, nearly the entire house was illuminated.
Expensive vehicles crowded the driveway.
Through the windows, he could see formally dressed guests carrying glasses and chatting beneath elaborate holiday decorations.

Grant frowned.
Audrey had never mentioned a gathering.

When he entered, music floated through the foyer. Servers moved between groups of guests carrying trays while Lenora stood beside the fireplace in an elegant navy gown, laughing as though the entire house were hers.

Her expression shifted the instant she saw her son.
“Grant? Why are you home tonight?”

Something about that question unsettled him.
Not welcome home. Not what an amazing surprise.
Why was he here?

Grant looked around.
“Where’s Audrey?”

Lenora raised her glass.
“Probably resting. She’s been extremely emotional lately. You know how exhausting these first weeks can be for new mothers.”

Grant’s concern deepened.
He walked past her without responding.

“Grant,” Lenora called after him. “Please don’t create a scene. I have important guests downstairs.”

He was already heading upstairs.

**A Sound Beyond a Locked Door**

The second floor seemed unusually cold and quiet compared with the celebration below.
Grant checked their bedroom first.
Empty.
Then Caleb’s nursery.
Empty again.

His heartbeat quickened.
“Audrey?”

No answer.
He continued farther along the hallway.
Then he heard something.
A quiet noise.
Scratching.

Grant stopped.
It seemed to come from a storage room beside the dressing area.
He grabbed the handle.
Locked.

“Audrey?”

A faint voice answered from the other side.
“Grant?”

His stomach dropped.
He quickly opened the door.

Audrey was sitting on the floor wrapped in a thin robe, visibly cold and deeply distressed. One side of her face looked irritated, and her eyes were puffy from crying.

For several moments, Grant could not speak.
Audrey reached toward him.
“Caleb. Please find Caleb.”

Grant dropped beside her.
“What happened?”
“Your mother took my phone. Paige locked the door. I tried to leave, but nobody upstairs would listen to me.”

Grant felt his frustration building, but Audrey suddenly held his arm.
“Grant, please. Find our baby first.”

He ran.

**The Open Window**

Caleb was inside a smaller guest nursery at the opposite end of the hallway.
Grant found the door partially closed.
When he stepped inside, icy air immediately hit his face.

One of the large windows stood completely open.
A light layer of snow had drifted across the floor.
Caleb was resting in his crib beneath only a lightweight blanket.
He was unusually still.

Grant hurried forward and gently touched his son.
Something did not feel right.
Caleb felt alarmingly chilled, while his forehead seemed noticeably warmer than expected.

Grant immediately lifted him and wrapped him securely inside his coat.
Audrey appeared in the doorway, supporting herself against the wall.
“Oh, my baby.”

Grant reached for his phone.
Before he could place the call, Lenora entered the hallway beside Grant’s younger sister, Paige.

Lenora appeared more annoyed than worried.
“Could you please keep your voices down?” she asked. “Everyone downstairs can hear you.”

Grant stared at her.
“The window was open.”

Paige crossed her arms.
“Maybe Audrey opened it herself. She hasn’t exactly seemed like herself lately.”

Audrey shook her head.
“That isn’t true.”

Lenora released an exaggerated sigh.
“Grant, she has been overwhelmed for weeks. She cries often, forgets things and believes everyone is against her. We have all been doing our best to support her.”

Grant looked at his wife.
Then at his son. Then back toward his mother.
“Why was Audrey locked inside that room?”

For the first time, Lenora paused.
Only briefly.
“She became difficult.”

That response gave Grant everything he needed to understand for now.
He did not argue.

He carried Caleb downstairs, helped Audrey beside him and walked directly through the center of Lenora’s elegant gathering.
Guests turned and watched.

Lenora followed quickly behind them.
“Grant, think carefully about what you’re doing.”

Grant opened the front door.
“For once, Mother, that is exactly what I’m doing.”
