At my daughter’s third birthday pool party, she suddenly pointed at my stepmother’s stomach and announced, “Daddy’s in there.” I laughed at first, until I realized exactly WHAT she was pointing at.

PART 1

At my daughter’s third birthday pool party, she pointed right at my stepmother’s stomach and yelled that her daddy was inside there, which made me laugh out loud until I realized what she was actually looking at.

For my daughter Paisley’s third birthday, my husband, Trevor, and I decided to keep things completely low-key and throw a party in our own backyard down in Jacksonville, Florida.

Her preschool classmates came over along with almost our entire extended family, and the yard filled up quickly with kids splashing in the pool, adults chatting around the food table, and people drifting back and forth between the water and the lawn chairs.

Even my stepmother, Rosalyn, made an appearance, which shocked me much more than I cared to admit to anyone else.

Rosalyn had married my father twenty years ago when I was still an argumentative teenager, and she had simply never taken a liking to me. I could not pinpoint a single terrible event that ruined our bond, but we never grew close, and after years of awkward silences, staying out of each other’s way became much easier than pretending we were family.

Still, this was Paisley’s special day, so when Rosalyn walked through the back gate, I felt genuinely glad that she had put in the effort to show up.

For the first couple of hours, everything went smoothly without a single hint of drama.

The children splashed in the shallow end, the grown-ups ate grilled food, and Paisley zoomed around the grass with her little friends like she possessed enough stamina for the whole neighborhood.

Then Rosalyn climbed out of the water wearing a stylish white one-piece swimsuit and started walking toward the patio.

At that exact second, Paisley came sprinting past the pool with a small crew of kids who were all heading over to grab ice cream cones.

Paisley suddenly froze in her tracks.

She stared intently at Rosalyn.

Then she thrust her finger straight toward Rosalyn’s midsection and shouted loud enough for half the backyard to hear, “Mommy, look, Daddy is inside there!”

A burst of laughter erupted from several relatives standing near the patio table.

I laughed along with them at first.

For about two seconds, I assumed this was just one of those wildly bizarre comments a three-year-old makes, the kind of goofy sentence that becomes a beloved family joke for the next decade.

Then the overwhelming embarrassment kicked in, making my cheeks burn.

I hurried over to her, gently lowered her small arm, and leaned down to explain that pointing at people’s bodies was not very polite.

“Come on, sweetheart,” I said while trying to guide her toward the ice cream table. “Let’s go get your chocolate cone with the rest of your friends.”

But Paisley planted her sneakers firmly into the grass and refused to move.

Her tiny eyebrows knitted together tightly.

“But Daddy is inside there!” she yelled with total urgency. “You have to help save him right now!”

A couple of cousins laughed again, though their giggles sounded far more confused than before.

Trevor was standing just a few feet away holding a plate of burgers, watching the entire exchange with a bewildered shrug on his face.

I gestured right over to him so Paisley could see.

“Sweetheart, look over there, Daddy is standing right beside the grill,” I reassured her softly.

Paisley turned her head to look at Trevor for a split second.

Then she snapped her eyes right back to Rosalyn.

Immediately, her eyes welled up with big tears, and she began to sob hysterically.

This was not her usual dramatic tantrum whenever she wanted extra dessert before bedtime. This was a genuine mix of terror and total frustration, and that was the exact moment the situation stopped being funny to anyone.

“Daddy is right on her stomach!” Paisley kept sobbing while stomping her little feet.

I knelt right in front of her to pull her into a comforting hug, but Paisley pushed past my arms and refused to let the issue go.

Rosalyn rolled her eyes in deep annoyance.

“The girl is just spouting absolute nonsense,” Rosalyn muttered under her breath, walking over to her reclining chair and lying down as if the matter was not worth a single second of her precious time.

I stayed down on the grass beside Paisley, genuinely trying to figure out what could have possibly triggered such a violent reaction in her mind.

Suddenly, Paisley grabbed my right hand.

Her tiny fingers gripped mine with surprising strength, and before I could even stop her, she yanked me across the concrete pool deck right toward Rosalyn’s chair.

PART 2

Paisley pulled me so hard that I almost lost my balance on the wet concrete right beside the deep end. Trevor followed close behind us with a confused expression, while Rosalyn lifted her head off the chair pillow with visible irritation.
