And like most corporate employees, I\u00a0usually look forward to\u00a0it.<\/p>\n<p>This year, my\u00a0stepson was staying with when\u00a0<strong>I was two days into my\u00a0vacation. He\u00a0suddenly got sick<\/strong>. My\u00a0husband asked me\u00a0to\u00a0spend my\u00a0vacation at\u00a0home caring for him. I\u00a0told him, \u201cI\u2019m not his mom,\u201d and he\u00a0called me\u00a0\u201cheartless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pardon\u00a0me, but how can he\u00a0expect me\u00a0to\u00a0take care of\u00a0his teenage son? I\u00a0wouldn\u2019t make a\u00a0big deal out of\u00a0it\u00a0if\u00a0he\u00a0were just a\u00a0small kid, but he\u2019s almost fifteen.\u00a0<strong>He\u2019s at\u00a0an\u00a0age where he\u00a0can take care of\u00a0himself, let alone need a\u00a0nanny to\u00a0look after him<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>So, without saying anything,\u00a0<strong>I\u00a0called the boy\u2019s mom<\/strong>\u00a0and asked her to\u00a0come pick him\u00a0up. She did, but when my\u00a0husband found out, he\u00a0was furious. He\u00a0said he\u00a0wanted his son to\u00a0stay longer and that\u00a0I ruined his plans.<\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0don\u2019t have anything against my\u00a0stepson, and\u00a0I don\u2019t mind helping out sometimes, but\u00a0I don\u2019t think it\u2019s fair that my\u00a0<strong>entire vacation had to\u00a0turn into sick-day babysitting duty<\/strong>. His mom and dad should be\u00a0the ones to\u00a0step in\u00a0when he\u2019s sick, not me\u00a0giving up\u00a0the only time\u00a0I get off work all year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>I\u00a0understand my\u00a0husband wants more time with his son, but that doesn\u2019t mean\u00a0I should have to\u00a0sacrifice the break I\u2019ve worked hard for. I\u00a0told him\u00a0<strong>if\u00a0he\u00a0wanted to\u00a0spend time with him that much, he\u00a0could\u2019ve taken a\u00a0day or\u00a0two off from work and cared for him himself<\/strong>. Now he\u00a0won\u2019t stop bringing it\u00a0up\u00a0and making me\u00a0feel guilty, and it\u2019s putting a\u00a0real strain on\u00a0things at\u00a0home.<\/p>\n<p>So, am\u00a0I really the heartless one here, or\u00a0is\u00a0it\u00a0unfair that I\u2019m expected to\u00a0put my\u00a0own time aside whenever this happens?<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p>Protect \u201cnon-negotiable\u201d time off.<\/p>\n<p>Choose at\u00a0least one week or\u00a0a\u00a0few days each year that you\u00a0<strong>clearly define as\u00a0your vacation<\/strong>, no\u00a0guests, no\u00a0obligations. Make this a\u00a0yearly routine. By\u00a0doing\u00a0so, everyone adjusts their expectations in\u00a0advance, and you don\u2019t have to\u00a0fight over your time last minute.<\/p>\n<p>Suggest shared care instead of\u00a0taking it\u00a0all\u00a0on.<\/p>\n<p>If\u00a0your stepson gets sick again, offer to\u00a0<strong>cover only part of\u00a0the day<\/strong>\u00a0and leave the rest to\u00a0his parents. For example, you can handle meals or\u00a0check-ins while his dad handles evenings.
