My five-year-old daughter, Lily, was so excited about writing her letter to Santa that year. Usually I write it for her while she dictates, but this time we decided to do it together. We even started a whole month early so we could talk about what she really wanted and make it special.<\/p>\n

She sat at the kitchen table with crayons spread everywhere, thinking very hard.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want a kitchen set,\u201d she said first.<\/p>\n

I wrote it down.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd a camera like James has.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay,\u201d I smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd a smartwatch like Pam\u2019s!\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed. \u201cYou\u2019re five, sweetheart.\u201d<\/p>\n

She grinned, then suddenly added something that made my hand stop mid-sentence.<\/p>\n

I froze.<\/p>\n

\u201cYours,\u201d she said casually.<\/p>\n

My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n

My mother adored Lily. She had always respected boundaries. And my husband loved our daughter more than anything. My brain immediately tried to dismiss the thought.<\/p>\n

Kids misunderstand things all the time, I told myself.<\/p>\n

Still\u2026 something about the way Lily said it stuck with me.<\/p>\n

Over the next few days, I kept noticing little things.<\/p>\n

My mom would text during the afternoon asking vague questions like, \u201cAre you busy today?\u201d or \u201cWhat time will you be home?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sometimes my husband would mention he\u2019d taken a late lunch or stayed home for part of the afternoon.<\/p>\n

Each detail by itself meant nothing.<\/p>\n

But together, they created this uncomfortable feeling in my chest that wouldn\u2019t go away.<\/p>\n

Finally, I asked Lily another question one evening.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes Grandma come often during the day?\u201d<\/p>\n

She nodded without hesitation.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah. A lot.\u201d<\/p>\n

My heart dropped.<\/p>\n

So the next day, I did something I\u2019d never done before.<\/p>\n

I left work early.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t tell anyone.<\/p>\n

I drove home quietly, my mind racing the whole way. Part of me hoped Lily had simply misunderstood everything and I\u2019d walk into an empty house.<\/p>\n

When I unlocked the door, the house was silent.<\/p>\n

For a moment, I thought I had imagined the whole thing.<\/p>\n

Then, a few minutes later, I heard my husband\u2019s voice upstairs.<\/p>\n

And\u2026 strange noises.<\/p>\n

My pulse started pounding.<\/p>\n

I dropped my bag and ran up the stairs.<\/p>\n

When I pushed open the bedroom door\u2014<\/p>\n

I saw my mom.<\/p>\n

But not in the way my fears had imagined.<\/p>\n

She was kneeling beside our bed with a toolbox open. My husband was holding the bed frame while she tightened a screw with a small wrench.<\/p>\n

Both of them jumped when I burst in.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhoa!\u201d my husband said. \u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n

I stood there, breathing hard, trying to process what I was seeing.<\/p>\n

\u201cFixing your bed,\u201d she said. \u201cDidn\u2019t you notice it\u2019s been squeaking like crazy lately?\u201d<\/p>\n

My husband nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour mom used to do furniture repairs when she worked at the community center,\u201d he explained. \u201cShe offered to help tighten the frame while you were at work.\u201d<\/p>\n

My mind raced back to Lily\u2019s story.<\/p>\n

Putting his shirt on.<\/p>\n

Odd noises.<\/p>\n

The bedroom.<\/p>\n

Suddenly it made sense.<\/p>\n

When I explained what Lily had told me, both of them burst out laughing in relief.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe \u2018playing\u2019?\u201d my mom chuckled. \u201cThat\u2019s what we told her when she woke up and caught us fixing things in here. We didn\u2019t want to explain tools and repairs to a half-asleep five-year-old.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then my mom added something that made my heart soften.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been coming in the afternoons because I wanted to surprise you. Your husband said you\u2019ve been stressed lately, so we\u2019ve been fixing little things around the house.\u201d<\/p>\n

I felt my face grow warm with embarrassment.<\/p>\n

That evening, Lily finished her Santa letter.<\/p>\n
