My husband, Alex, and I had just moved into our first apartment together. It wasn\u2019t huge or luxurious, but it was ours. We had saved for years to afford it, carefully budgeting, skipping vacations, and working extra hours whenever we could.<\/p>\n
To celebrate, we hosted a small housewarming dinner.<\/p>\n
We invited almost the same group of people who had come to our wedding\u2014close family and a few friends. My parents were there, Alex\u2019s parents, his sister Katie, and a handful of relatives.<\/p>\n
One thing surprised me right away.<\/p>\n
Katie showed up without her kids.<\/p>\n
She had three young children, and normally they went everywhere with her. I asked about them when she arrived.<\/p>\n

I blinked.<\/p>\n

Before I could even process it, Alex spoke up beside me.<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah,\u201d he said casually. \u201cMom\u2019s right.\u201d<\/p>\n
I turned to him slowly.<\/p>\n
He kept talking like he was explaining a simple plan.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can move in with Mom and Dad for a while and start saving again. Katie could really use the peace here with the kids.\u201d<\/p>\n
The room went completely silent.<\/p>\n
I stared at him, waiting for the punchline.<\/p>\n
There wasn\u2019t one.<\/p>\n
My father stopped chewing mid-bite.<\/p>\n
My mother\u2019s expression went perfectly still.<\/p>\n
Across the table, Barbara smiled proudly, like she had just solved world hunger.<\/p>\n
Katie looked down at her plate, avoiding everyone\u2019s eyes.<\/p>\n
My heart started pounding.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlex,\u201d I said quietly, \u201cthis is our home.\u201d<\/p>\n
He shrugged.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s just temporary.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cTemporary?\u201d I repeated.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ll save up again,\u201d he said. \u201cYou know how expensive things are right now.\u201d<\/p>\n
I looked around the table, hoping someone from his family would say this was ridiculous.<\/p>\n
No one did.<\/p>\n
Barbara nodded approvingly.<\/p>\n
\u201cExactly,\u201d she said. \u201cYoung couples can rebuild. But Katie has three little ones. She needs stability.\u201d<\/p>\n
The entitlement in her voice made my stomach twist.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s when my mother slowly placed her napkin on the table.<\/p>\n
She didn\u2019t raise her voice.<\/p>\n
She didn\u2019t slam anything.<\/p>\n
She simply turned toward Barbara and looked her straight in the eye.<\/p>\n
Then she said calmly, \u201cBarbara, I think there\u2019s been a misunderstanding.\u201d<\/p>\n
Barbara\u2019s smile tightened.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh?\u201d<\/p>\n
My mother folded her hands neatly.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy daughter didn\u2019t buy this apartment for your daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n
The room felt like it was holding its breath.<\/p>\n

You volunteered your<\/em> home.
