I\u2019ve always considered myself a trusting parent. I rarely snoop or hover, and I like to believe my daughter knows that.<\/p>\n

Still, trust sometimes gets challenged\u2014like that Sunday afternoon when I heard laughter and hushed voices coming from behind her closed bedroom door.<\/p>\n

My daughter is fourteen, and her boyfriend\u2014also fourteen\u2014is polite, gentle, and, for a teenager, surprisingly respectful.<\/p>\n

He greets us every time he arrives, slips off his shoes at the door, and thanks me when he heads home.<\/p>\n

Every Sunday, he visits, and the two of them spend hours in her room. I remind myself they\u2019re just hanging out, but when the giggles get quieter and the door stays firmly shut, my imagination starts to wander.<\/p>\n

But then a little voice in my head started asking, What if? What if something\u2019s happening that I should know about? What if I\u2019m being too trusting? Before I realized it, I was slowly walking down the hallway.<\/p>\n

And when I reached her door, I gently nudged it open just a sliver.<\/p>\n

Soft music was playing in the background, and there they were, cross-legged on the rug, surrounded by notebooks, highlighters, and math problems.<\/p>\n

She was explaining something, so concentrated that she barely spotted someone entering the room.<\/p>\n

Her boyfriend was nodding, completely focused on my daughter\u2019s math explanations. The plate of cookies she took to the room was at her desk, untouched.<\/p>\n

She looked up and smiled, a little confused. \u201cMom? Do you need something?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, I just wanted to see if you wanted more cookies.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re good, thanks!\u201d she said, and turned to what she was doing.<\/p>\n

I closed the door and leaned against the wall, half embarrassed and half relieved.<\/p>\n
