My husband slapped me in front of his entire family and screamed, “Get out of my house!” while my mother-in-law smiled like she had finally won. Neither of them realized the $10,000 monthly allowance keeping her lavish lifestyle alive came from me—and the mansion they were throwing me out of had been mine from the very beginning.

### **PART 3**

Daniel leaped out of his chair, backing away from the table. “Officers, what is the meaning of this?!”

“Daniel Brooks?” the taller officer asked, stepping forward and unhooking his metal handcuffs. “You’re under arrest for felony domestic assault, based on the high-definition security footage your wife provided.”

The officer then turned to Evelyn, who was gripping the edge of the table, hyperventilating so hard her perfect pearls rattled against her chest. “And Mrs. Brooks, you’re being taken into custody for extortion and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.”

“You can’t do this to me!” Evelyn shrieked, her voice cracking into a pathetic wail as the officer grabbed her wrists and slammed them into cuffs. “I am Evelyn Brooks! That is my house! You ungrateful little brat, I gave you a family!”

I picked up my designer coat, slipped it on, and picked up my purse.

“No, Evelyn,” I said, looking down at her as the officers dragged her toward the door. “You gave me a parasite. And I’m finally cutting it out.”

I walked out of that building a completely free woman. I left my cheating, abusive husband, his wicked mother, and my corrupt lawyer locked in a nightmare of their own making.

That evening, I unlocked the front doors of my multi-million-dollar mansion. The locks had already been changed. The abusive yelling was gone. The constant, suffocating criticism had vanished.

As I stood alone in my breathtaking marble foyer, staring up at the crystal chandelier, the house was finally perfectly, beautifully silent.

And it was all mine.
