**PART 2**
Then Daniel messaged:
“DAD, THIS IS AN EMERGENCY. CALL ME NOW!”
I was enjoying coffee on my porch, no longer frightened by their emergencies.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang.
Daniel stood outside, furious, with Vanessa, Melissa, and Kevin behind him.
“What the hell are you doing?” Daniel demanded.
I opened the screen door.
“Enjoying my retirement.”
Vanessa scowled.
“You canceled our payments!”
“Yes.”
“You can’t just abandon your family!”
I examined the four adults before me.
“Really?”
Daniel advanced.
“You’re destroying everything we’ve built!”
I nearly laughed. I’d paid for much of what they’d built.
Then Vanessa revealed their expectations.
“We already planned the next three years around your salary!”
I smiled.
“Then you should have asked whether I intended to keep earning it.”
Daniel stared.
“What are you saying?”
I met his eyes.
“I’m saying the bank of Dad is permanently closed.”
Vanessa gasped.
“You selfish old man!”
I rested against the doorway.
“Careful, Vanessa. You’re standing on property I actually own.”
Daniel changed his approach.
“Dad, let’s calm down. We can discuss this.”
“We already did. At dinner.”
“You agreed!”
“No. I said I understood.”
Melissa started crying.
“My children could lose their school!”
“Then you’ll need to find another affordable option.”
Kevin finally intervened.
“My business could collapse without your help.”
“Then you need to make your business profitable.”
They looked stunned. For years, I’d prevented them from facing their own financial consequences.
Daniel angrily pointed at me.
“You have millions saved! You don’t need all that money!”
I agreed.
“You’re right.”
He blinked.
“I am?”
“Yes. I don’t need all of it. But that doesn’t mean you get to spend it.”
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“So you’re choosing money over family?”
“No,” I answered. “I’m choosing my health over your entitlement.”
Then I confronted Daniel about his fabricated emergencies, showing him the bank records.
“Three months ago, you told me your roof needed emergency repairs.”
He shifted nervously.
“It did.”
“Then why did the money go toward a luxury vacation?”
Vanessa turned pale.
Melissa faced Daniel.
“You took Dad’s money for a vacation?”
Daniel snapped.
“Stay out of it!”
I continued exposing their spending.
“Kevin, you told me your business needed equipment repairs. But the statements you voluntarily sent me showed you purchased a recreational boat.”
Kevin lowered his gaze.
Their excuses had finally collapsed.
“You’re all adults,” I said. “You can make your own choices. But you will pay for them yourselves.”
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“Dad, what are we supposed to do?”
“Work. Budget. Sell things you can’t afford.”
Vanessa scoffed.
“Easy for you to say.”
I stepped closer.
“I worked nights while raising two children. I missed birthdays to pay bills. I drove the same car for fifteen years.”
Nobody spoke.
“Your mother and I never had everything we wanted. But we lived within our means.”
Melissa wiped her tears.
“I’m sorry, Dad.”
Her apology sounded genuine, but my decision stood.
“You are always welcome to visit,” I told them. “But don’t come expecting a check.”
They departed quietly.
