That was the exact moment I realized they weren’t acting on a foolish impulse.
They were calculatingly planning to render me homeless at the exact moment I brought our child into the world.
And they still had no idea that the house they were betraying me over already belonged to someone else entirely.
What happened next was far worse than either of them could have ever anticipated.
PART 2
One week later, I went into labor in the middle of the night. While I was recovering in a private recovery room at a hospital in Allentown, exhausted and holding baby Harper for the first time, Christopher vanished for several hours.
“I have to run out and take care of an urgent matter regarding the house,” he claimed after holding his daughter for less than five minutes.
I already knew with absolute certainty what that urgent matter was.
That exact same afternoon, Rachel called my personal cellphone.
“Nora, someone is currently trying to execute a fraudulent sale on your former property,” she informed me.
I looked down at Harper sleeping peacefully in my arms.
“Is it Christopher?” I asked softly.
“All the paperwork points directly to him,” Rachel confirmed. “He presented forged authorization documents claiming he had full power of attorney to dispose of the estate.”
“How much is he trying to sell it for?”
There was a long, tense pause on the line.
“Eight hundred thousand dollars,” Rachel replied softly.
I closed my eyes as anger surged through me.
The historic home had just been valued and sold for nearly three million dollars.
Christopher was so desperate that he was willing to give it away for less than a third of its actual value just to get fast cash.
“Can he actually complete this illegal transaction?” I asked.
“Absolutely not,” Rachel said. “The County Registry already reflects the updated ownership deed under the new buyers. However, there is another severe legal issue now.”
“What is it?”
“He signed binding legal documents promising title delivery for a property that no longer belongs to you or him,” she explained.
A cold chill ran down my spine.
It wasn’t because I wanted to see him destroyed.
It was because he had just proven to me how utterly ruthless he truly was.
The following morning, Christopher strolled into my hospital room accompanied by Brenda.
Neither of them bothered to ask how I was feeling or how the baby was doing.
Christopher was holding a thick leather folder tucked under his arm.
“Everything has been completely taken care of,” he announced with a triumphant grin.
“What are you talking about?” I asked, pretending to be clueless.
“The house,” he replied, patting the folder.
Brenda smiled smugly from the foot of the bed.
“You can stop worrying your head about real estate matters now, Nora,” she said condescendingly.
I decided to play along with their cruel game a little longer.
“Did you sell my father’s house?” I asked softly.
“Yes, I did,” Christopher answered proudly.
“For how much?”
Christopher shifted his weight uncomfortably and avoided my gaze.
“The exact figure doesn’t matter right now.”
“It matters a great deal to me,” I insisted.
“Eight hundred thousand dollars,” he admitted under his breath.
I stared at him in utter disbelief for several long seconds.
“You sold a three-million-dollar property for eight hundred thousand dollars?”
“We needed the cash transaction completed immediately!” he snapped back defensively.
“Who needed it done so quickly?” I countered.
Brenda stepped forward and cut in with an irritated tone.
“Don’t start an unnecessary argument right now,” she scolded me. “You just had a baby, so you should be focusing on more important things.”
Right at that moment, the hospital door swung open.
Rachel walked into the room carrying a black briefcase.
Christopher went completely pale the moment he recognized my attorney.
“What on earth is she doing here?” he asked, stepping back nervously.
Rachel pulled out a certified legal document and laid it gently on the bedside table.
“This is the official public record of the sale Nora completed two weeks before you attempted to sell the property,” Rachel announced calmly.
Brenda snatched the paper off the table with trembling hands.
Her eyes frantically scanned the top page before her jaw dropped open.
“No… this can’t be real…” she whispered.
Christopher stared at me in total shock.
“You sold the house behind my back?” he shouted.
“Yes,” I replied coldly. “I sold my property.”
“Without even consulting your own husband?”
“It was legally my property, Christopher,” I reminded him.
“I am your husband!” he yelled, his face turning red.
“And that status never gave you ownership over my inheritance,” I shot back.
Rachel kept her tone strictly professional as she addressed him.
“The fraudulent transaction you attempted to carry out cannot proceed,” she stated. “The buyer will undoubtedly demand immediate return of any cash deposit handed over, and you will have to explain to law enforcement why you offered a property you did not own.”
Christopher collapsed heavily onto a nearby visitor chair, placing his head in his hands.
“I didn’t know it was already sold…” he muttered.
“You knew with absolute certainty that the title was never in your name,” I pointed out directly.
Brenda pointed an accusing finger straight at my face.
“You trapped him!” she shrieked. “You purposefully let him walk into this disaster!”
“I never asked him to forge my signature or sell something that belonged to someone else,” I answered calmly.
“He is your husband!” she screamed. “You should have warned him before he signed anything!”
