Chapter 3
Three months later, I stood at the podium in the State Capitol building, wearing my formal dress uniform. Beside me stood Mia Jenkins, who had been awarded a state medal for civil courage and offered a full scholarship to pursue her degree in criminal justice. The state legislature officially passed the Vance Reform Act, banning private corporate funding of local police details and establishing independent oversight for all retail security operations across the state.
As I looked out at the crowded auditorium, I thought back to that terrifying moment when steel cuffs tightened around my wrists in the department store. Justice isn’t something that happens automatically in the shadows of power; it is fought for by ordinary people willing to speak up when everything is on the line. I had gone into that store looking for a simple gift for my sister, but I left having helped tear down a system of corruption that had robbed innocent people of their lives for far too long.
