He smiled warmly at her.
“I had a strong suspicion it was yours,” he replied.
He placed the cardigan around her shoulders, then kissed me gently on the temple.
Gavin’s expression changed instantly from smug arrogance to deep shock.
He recognized the man standing beside me right away.
Most executives in the southern technology sector knew exactly who he was.
Douglas Mercer was the founder of Mercer Capital Partners, one of the most respected private investment firms in the region.
More importantly, Mercer Capital was currently considering a major investment in Gavin’s business.
Gavin looked back and forth from Douglas to me.
“You two know each other?” Gavin asked, his voice suddenly hesitant.
Douglas rested his hand lightly against my back.
“I would certainly hope so,” Douglas answered smoothly. “She is my wife.”
For perhaps the first time since I had known him, Gavin Albright had absolutely nothing to say.
Part 4: The Truth Unfolds
Brenda recovered her composure first.
“You married Douglas Mercer?” she asked in disbelief.
“Three years ago,” I replied calmly.
Gavin continued to stare at me in complete disbelief.
“And the little girl?” he asked awkwardly.
Chloe answered the question for herself.
“I am their daughter,” she said brightly.
She was not interested in explaining our family history to strangers, and neither was I.
Douglas and I had adopted Chloe after fostering her for nearly a year.
She was ours in every single way that mattered.
Gavin finally gave a stiff, awkward laugh.
“Well,” he stammered. “Congratulations to you both.”
“Thank you,” I said softly.
Then something else occurred to him.
His eyes narrowed in sudden anxiety.
“Mercer Capital is currently reviewing Albright Security,” he realized aloud.
Douglas maintained a neutral expression.
“Yes, we are,” Douglas replied.
Gavin looked directly at me with growing suspicion.
“You knew about this?” he demanded.
Before I could answer, Douglas spoke up calmly.
“Nora is the chair of our regulatory review committee,” Douglas explained.
Brenda’s confident smile disappeared completely.
Gavin nearly laughed again, but this time the sound was nervous and uncertain.
“Nora?” he asked in disbelief.
I nodded gently.
After our divorce, I had accepted a senior counsel position with a midsized investment group in Biloxi. Two years later, I joined Mercer Capital Partners.
My work there had changed everything for my career.
During my first major acquisition review, I uncovered a hidden vendor arrangement that could have exposed the firm to tens of millions of dollars in regulatory liability.
The transaction was restructured safely.
The investment company was protected from catastrophic loss.
I was promoted shortly after.
Later, I became a full partner in the firm.
Somewhere along the way, the career Gavin had always called boring became the exact reason wealthy people trusted me with billion-dollar transactions.
Part 5: The Unraveling of the Deal
Gavin lowered his voice significantly.
“Nora, maybe we should step outside and talk privately,” he suggested anxiously.
“There is nothing appropriate for us to discuss privately tonight,” I answered firmly.
“This is serious business,” he insisted.
“Exactly,” I replied.
His face hardened instantly.
He understood then that I was not merely Douglas Mercer’s wife.
I was one of the key decision-makers reviewing his entire company.
For the previous seven weeks, my dedicated team had been examining Albright Security Solutions’ financial books before Mercer Capital made its final investment decision.
At first glance, the company appeared highly profitable.
Then one of our senior financial analysts noticed several consulting vendors receiving unusually consistent payments.
The companies had vague names, minimal staff, and mailing addresses that led directly to shared office suites.
So we decided to look much deeper into the records.
The deeper we looked, the stranger the financial transactions became.
Payments moved regularly from Gavin’s company to outside vendors, then directly into a network of accounts connected to people close to senior management.
Invoices referenced complex projects that could not be independently verified.
Furthermore, revenue figures submitted to potential lenders did not consistently match internal tax records.
I had seen enough irregularities in my legal career to know exactly what that meant.
And Gavin still believed tonight was about our personal divorce.
It was not.
Part 6: The Reality of the Situation
Gavin took a small step toward me.
“Whatever personal feelings you still have about me, you cannot let them influence Mercer Capital’s business decision,” he demanded quietly.
I met his frantic eyes steadily.
“My personal feelings have not influenced anything,” I said truthfully.
“Then you will support the investment deal?” he asked, hope flashing in his eyes.
“No, I will not,” I replied directly.
Brenda inhaled sharply at my answer.
Gavin’s jaw tightened in anger.
“Why?” he demanded.
I glanced toward little Chloe, who was watching us curiously.
Douglas understood immediately and gently led Chloe toward the dessert table across the room.
When they were safely out of earshot, I gave Gavin my final answer.
“Because your numbers do not support the glowing story you have been telling investors,” I said quietly.
The remaining color drained from Gavin’s face entirely.
“I do not know what you are talking about,” he stuttered.
“Then your legal counsel can explain it to you in detail,” I suggested smoothly.
“Nora, please,” he pleaded under his breath.
“Not tonight, Gavin,” I said firmly.
I turned away from him.
He caught himself just before reaching out to grab my arm in public.
“Are you trying to ruin my life because of what happened with Brenda?” he hissed softly.
I looked back at him one last time.
That pathetic question told me how little he had actually changed over five years.
He still believed every action in the world revolved around him.
