That night, she confronted Harrison. “I need to know who this woman is.”
Harrison looked at the photograph, his eyes darkening. “Adriana. My late wife.”
“Where is she?”
Harrison answered flatly, “Dead.”
Maya shook her head slowly. “No. I saw her three weeks ago.”
She told him everything: the apartment, Mark, the impersonation, the hospital contact.
Harrison remained silent for several long minutes. Then he made two phone calls.
Over the next twenty-four hours, his private investigator and corporate attorney pulled archived records, financial movements, and old police reports.
The following evening, Harrison met Maya in the garden. His face was pale and drawn. “You were right.”
Maya held her breath. “It’s Adriana?”
“Yes.”
“Then who died in that car crash two years ago?”
Harrison looked back toward the house where Leo was sleeping. “We don’t know yet.”
He pulled out a set of documents. “But we uncovered something worse. Adriana was having an affair with your husband before the crash.”
Maya felt her world shatter all over again.
Harrison continued, “And there’s more. Your apartment in the city has already been sold.”
“What?”
“They used your documents, a forged ID, and help from someone inside a title office. The proceeds were just wired into an offshore account.”
Maya began to cry.
Harrison placed a second paper in front of her. “But Mark isn’t getting that money either.”
“Why?”
Harrison looked up into her eyes. “Because Adriana just transferred almost every dollar into a private account controlled solely by her.”
Maya realized then that the woman who had tried to steal her identity was also double-crossing her own accomplice.
But they still needed to figure out why Adriana had faked her death, who had died in her place, and how Mark was connected to that fatal crash.
And the answer was far more terrifying than either of them could have imagined.
PART 3
Harrison didn’t sleep that night. Neither did Maya.
They sat at the kitchen island long after Leo was asleep, reviewing financial files while Harrison’s investigator sent updated field reports.
Piece by piece, the puzzle came together.
Two years ago, Adriana and Mark were lovers. Mark was working at the time as a private driver for Harrison’s firm. Maya had actually met Mark during that period, when he offered to give her a ride home during a heavy rainstorm. While Maya was building what she thought was a genuine relationship with him, Mark was holding secret meetings with Adriana.
“I discovered the affair shortly before the crash,” Harrison confessed quietly. “I was preparing to file for divorce.”
“Did Mark know you found out?” Maya asked.
“Yes. I fired him a week before the accident.”
Harrison pulled out a technical mechanic’s report. After the crash, he had commissioned an independent forensic review of his wife’s vehicle. The brake lines had been intentionally tampered with.
“The police treated it as a tragic accident,” Harrison explained. “I was completely destroyed over Leo. The car caught fire, and they found human remains inside. I didn’t push for a deeper investigation back then.”
“And Adriana?”
“We all assumed it was her.”
The young boy had been thrown several yards clear of the vehicle, miraculously surviving, though the trauma caused him to shut down and stop speaking entirely.
Now, Harrison suspected a far darker truth: Adriana had planned to run away with Mark, taking Leo with them to extort Harrison for millions later. But Mark never intended to run away with her. He had sabotaged the brakes, expecting Adriana to die in the crash so he could claim whatever cash she brought.
Except Adriana survived. And she used the tragedy to vanish into the shadows.
“Who was inside the burning car?” Maya asked, horrified.
“Likely a female hitchhiker Adriana picked up on the highway,” Harrison said grimly. “We’re asking the state police to reopen the case and perform new DNA testing.”
Maya felt sick to her stomach. “So my husband tried to kill his mistress… married me… and years later she returned?”
“She returned to get revenge on him,” Harrison said. “And you were the perfect cover.”
Investigative records showed payments made to a plastic surgery clinic months after the crash. Adriana had modified several of her facial features, though not enough to become a completely unrecognizable person. Years later, when she re-emerged and approached Mark under a fake name, he didn’t even recognize her.
Adriana had quickly discovered that Maya owned a valuable, fully paid-off apartment in the city, inherited from her late great-aunt, alongside an increasingly cold marriage. The impersonation scheme was born right then.
“She watched you for months,” Harrison explained. “Your social media, your clothes, your habits. She re-entered Mark’s life as a new woman, seduced him again, and convinced him that she could pose as you during property transactions.”
“And he agreed to kill me for an apartment?”
Harrison didn’t answer. He didn’t have to.
The next morning, two men arrived at the gated community claiming to be police officers. They were asking for Maya Sterling, alleging that Evelyn had filed a grand larceny report against her for stealing $200,000 in family jewelry.
Harrison demanded to see their official warrant. They had none. He immediately called his chief legal counsel, who verified with the district attorney’s office that while a report had been made, no warrant or authorization to search Harrison’s property existed. The men left quickly once Harrison began photographing their badges.
“They know where I am,” Maya said, her voice shaking.
“Who did you give your full legal name to?” Harrison asked.
Maya remembered the front gate security guard who had logged her information when she was hired.
Harrison’s jaw set hard. “Evelyn is buying information.”
That changed everything. They could no longer hide.
Harrison’s legal team formally filed criminal complaints for fraud, identity theft, and extortion. They also placed an emergency lien on the apartment title and froze the bank accounts involved in the fraudulent sale.
While those legal motions were being processed, an unexpected call came through. Vania, an old friend of Maya’s who worked as an emergency room nurse, managed to track her down through Harrison’s office line.
“You need to come to the hospital,” Vania told her urgently. “Mark has just been admitted.”
Maya froze. “What happened?”
“Severe sedative toxicity. He was brought in nearly unconscious last night.”
“Who brought him in?”
There was a pause on the line. “A woman holding your ID, claiming to be Maya Sterling.”
Harrison looked up instantly.
Vania continued, “There’s more. She kept pressing the attending physician to find out if the overdose was going to be fatal. It raised every red flag I have.”
Adriana had decided to eliminate her accomplice. With Mark dead, she wouldn’t have to split the apartment money with anyone.
Harrison’s legal team sped up the asset-freeze requests with the state court. That very night, they successfully froze the offshore transfer before the funds could leave the country.
When Adriana attempted to access the money the following morning, she discovered every single cent was locked.
She completely lost control.
She marched directly into the hospital room where Mark was still hooked up to monitors and began screaming at him. “What did you do?! Where is my money?!”
Mark could barely open his eyes.
At that moment, Vania walked in, followed by Maya, Harrison, two homicide detectives, and a state prosecutor.
Adriana went dead still.
For several agonizing seconds, the two women stared at each other. The imposter had her hair styled exactly like Maya’s and was wearing colors Maya frequently wore. But up close, the physical differences were undeniable.
“Identification, please,” one of the detectives demanded.
Adriana smugly handed over Maya’s stolen ID card. The detective took it, looked at Maya, and then back at Adriana. “We’re going to run your fingerprints right now.”
