My Ex Showed Up at My Engagement Party With Four Children Who Looked Exactly Like Me and Begged for a Place to Sleep—While My Mother Toasted With My Fiancée Over $180 Million. Three Hours Earlier, I Had Gone to the Bathroom and Found the Children Waiting There.

Part 2 of 3

Adrian felt an icy wave wash over him. “You sent it back?”

“Every penny.”

Before he could process her words, the penthouse elevator chimed and the doors slid open. Eleanor Vance marched into the living room, her face flushed with anger.

“Adrian! What is the meaning of this disaster?! The Valdés family is furious, the press is asking questions, and— ” Eleanor stopped cold when she saw Claire standing by the hallway. “What is she doing here?”

Adrian opened his laptop on the counter and pulled up the archived bank records from six years ago. He pointed to the line item right beneath the initial outgoing transfer: a thirty-thousand-dollar incoming return wire from Claire Sterling.

“Explain this to me, Mother,” Adrian commanded softly.

Eleanor glanced at the screen, her expression hardening instantly. “I was protecting your future, Adrian. That girl was a distraction when you were about to take over the company.”

Adrian stood frozen. She didn’t deny it. She justified it.

Claire stepped forward, her voice trembling. “Tell him the rest, Eleanor. Tell him about when I came back to your office when the boys were six months old.”

Eleanor closed her eyes, refusing to look at either of them.

Adrian looked at his mother, a sudden, horrifying realization dawning on him. “You knew they were born? You knew I had children?”

His mother’s silence was the only answer he needed.

PART 3

For several long seconds, the penthouse fell dead quiet.

Eleanor stood near the entryway, clutching her leather handbag against her coat. Claire remained near the hallway door, instinctively guarding the room where her sons were sleeping.

Adrian turned his laptop toward his mother. “I want the full truth. Right now.”

Eleanor straightened her posture, attempting to regain control. “The truth is that your father had just suffered a heart attack, the company was drowning in debt, and you were taking on a multi-million-dollar leadership role. You couldn’t afford a scandal.”

“That doesn’t answer my question,” Adrian said through gritted teeth.

“She showed up pregnant at the worst possible time!” Eleanor snapped.

Claire let out a bitter, lifeless laugh. “I didn’t ‘show up.’ Adrian and I had been together for nearly three years.”

Eleanor ignored her, looking directly at her son. “If I hadn’t stepped in, that pregnancy would have destroyed your career before it even started!”

“So you decided to destroy my family instead,” Adrian said, his voice laced with cold fury.

“Don’t be dramatic, Adrian,” Eleanor scoffed.

That single sentence hurt more than the confession itself. For years, Eleanor had preached about the importance of family, repeating that a Vance always protects his own. Now Adrian saw the truth: to his mother, “protecting” meant deciding who was worthy of the Vance name and who was disposable.

“The letter,” Adrian said quietly. “The letter you gave me where Claire supposedly agreed to leave. Who wrote it?”

Eleanor remained silent.

Claire spoke up. “Your mother had me sign a blank notary acknowledgement form six years ago. She told me it was a formal receipt acknowledging that the wire transfer had been initiated.”

Eleanor turned her head away sharply. “You still signed it.”

Adrian went completely motionless.

Eleanor had just made a fatal mistake. Adrian had never mentioned to her that the signature on the release letter might have come from a separate document.

“How did you know what she signed, Mother?” Adrian asked, his voice dropping to a dangerous register.

Eleanor opened her mouth, but no words came out.

Adrian felt six years of bitter memories shift and shatter. The letter he had kept in his desk drawer for six years—the letter claiming Claire didn’t want to raise a child linked to his family—was an absolute forgery. Eleanor had physically cut and pasted Claire’s notarized signature onto a fake contract.

“You forged a legal agreement to keep me from my children?” Adrian asked, his hands shaking.

“I solved a problem you weren’t mature enough to handle!” Eleanor shouted.

“You didn’t give me a choice!” Adrian’s voice cracked across the room.

The shouting woke one of the boys. A door down the hall clicked open, and tiny footsteps padded across the hardwood floor.

Matthew appeared in the hallway, rubbing his eyes, barefoot. “Mommy…?”

Claire’s expression instantly softened. She knelt down beside her son. “It’s okay, sweetheart. Go back to sleep with your brothers.”

Matthew looked suspiciously at Eleanor, then turned his hazel-green eyes toward Adrian. “Is she mad at us, mister?”

The question hit Adrian right in the chest. He dropped to his knees, coming eye-to-eye with his eldest son. “No, buddy. You didn’t do anything wrong. Nobody is mad at you.”

“Do we have to leave now?” Matthew asked quietly.

Adrian looked up at Claire before answering. This time, he refused to make an impulsive promise he couldn’t keep alone. “You’re staying here tonight,” Adrian told the boy gently. “Tomorrow, your mom and I will figure everything out together.”

Matthew nodded, reassured, and walked back to the bedroom.

When the door clicked shut, Adrian stood up and faced his mother. “Get out.”

Eleanor stared at him in utter shock. “You’re kicking your own mother out of a penthouse paid for by Vance family money?”

“I bought this penthouse with my own earnings, Eleanor,” Adrian said coldly. “And starting tonight, I’m deciding what belongs in my life.”

Eleanor’s face flushed with rage. “If you walk away from the Valdés deal, Vance Infrastructure will lose a hundred and eighty million dollars in funding! You’ll ruin us!”

“Then we’ll find another way.”

“There is no other way!”

“That’s the exact same lie you told me about Claire,” Adrian replied flatly.

Eleanor realized she had lost. She pulled her coat around herself, turning toward the elevator. “You don’t even know if those four boys are actually yours.”

Adrian looked toward the closed bedroom door. “I’ll get a DNA test. And when it confirms what I already know, you will never make a decision about my children ever again.”

The elevator doors closed, leaving Adrian and Claire alone in the quiet apartment.

Claire looked at him quietly. “I don’t want to be the reason your company goes under, Adrian.”

“You aren’t.”

“You ruined a major corporate engagement tonight.”

Adrian walked over to the marble counter, picked up the velvet box containing the engagement ring meant for Claudia, and tossed it into the trash bin.

“I was about to marry a woman I didn’t love because everyone told me it was the only way to save my legacy,” Adrian said softly. “If my company can only survive by bartering my life, then the problem is much bigger than tonight.”

Claire studied his face. “You’ve changed.”

“Not enough,” Adrian admitted. “Not yet.”

The next morning, the financial scandal broke across New York business news. Claudia Valdés had left the restaurant furious, and news of the canceled engagement leaked to investors. Vance Infrastructure’s stock took an immediate hit, and the investment group suspended all talks.

By 9:00 AM, Adrian’s board of directors was demanding an emergency meeting.
